At 800 miles (1,280 km), the New York State Barge Canal is the longest internal waterway system in any state. The system is composed of the Erie, Oswego, Cayuga, Seneca and Champlain Canals. The canal system enables transport from the Hudson River – Tech Valley’s main waterway – to the Great Lakes and Canada. The Hudson River – a navigable year-round waterway – also flows through New York City, enabling passage to the Atlantic Ocean and ports abroad. The canals can accommodate vessels up to 2,000 tons (1,800 metric tons).
The
Port of Albany is Tech Valley's main port. Located on the Hudson River, goods are able to be shipped northward and westward through the New York's extensive canal system or southward to New York City. The port is conveniently located near the New York State Thruway, rail lines (Conrail and CP Rail) and
Albany International Airport.
