Major Waterways

Adirondacks/North Country
Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and Warren Counties including the cities of Plattsburgh and Glens Falls and the villages of Lake George, Lake Placid and Speculator.

There’s water, water everywhere in the Adirondacks/North Country. The Plattsburgh-North Country Region is less than an hour's drive from the Port of Montreal and the St. Lawrence Seaway. In addition, Lake Champlain is directly linked to the New York State Barge Canal System, offering direct barge access.

Capital Region
Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Washington Counties including the cities of Albany, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady and Troy and the towns of Bethlehem, Colonie, Guilderland, Greenwich, Mechanicville and Schoharie.

The Hudson and Mohawk Rivers are the major waterways in the Capital Region, and 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of explorer Henry Hudson’s historic voyage down the river that now bears his name. Strategically located on the upper Hudson River only 124 nautical miles north of New York City, the Port of Albany-Rensselaer is at the heart of an extensive water, rail and road transportation infrastructure. This year-round port offers a gateway to the world through the many oceangoing vessels and weekly container barge service calling at the facilities.

Hudson Valley
Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange and Ulster Counties including the cities of Hudson, Kingston, Newburgh and Poughkeepsie and the town of New Paltz.

As the Quadricentennial Celebration of the Hudson River continues, the Hudson Valley is receiving additional exposure for its famous waterway. Located approximately 60 miles north of New York City, Orange County is bordered by the Hudson River on the east, and the Delaware River on the west, giving Orange County the distinction of being the only county in New York state bordered by two rivers. Dutchess County is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley and is easily accessibly via the Hudson River.

Mohawk Valley
Herkimer, Fulton and Montgomery Counties including the cities of Amsterdam, Gloversville, Herkimer, Johnstown and Little Falls.

Wherever you go in the Mohawk Valley, waterways aren’t hard to find. The Erie Canal operates for navigation from early May to late November; there are seven locks on the Montgomery County portion, each with a park and picnic area. Montgomery County is also home to several marinas and boat launches, including the St. Johnsville Municipal Marina, Canajoharie Pavilion Landing, Schoharie Crossing, Amsterdam’s South Side boat launch and Riverlink Park in Amsterdam. Fulton County is known as the “Land of 44 Lakes,” and the Fulton Chain of Lakes features more than 12 miles of continuous lake travel.
