UAlbany Ranked Best in Nation for Nanotech
Learn more at UAlbany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering ranked #1 in the nation
The University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) is at the head of the class for nanotechnology and microtechnology. The latest university rankings released by Small Times magazine places the college No.1 overall and tops in education, facilities and industrial outreach – ahead of such schools as Cornell University, the University of Michigan, Rice University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina, Ohio State University, Northwestern University and the University of Minnesota.
Last year, the school placed first in nanotech facilities and outreach and microtech outreach and second in microtech facilities. There were no overall rankings last year.
The publication reported that “with the state’s blessing and strong support from industry, the young college has solidified its reputation as an applications-driven institution, particularly in the field of nanoelectronics.”
“The UAlbany Nanocollege being ranked number one above some of the nation’s most prestigious universities, is further proof that we are realizing our goal of making New York’s Tech Valley the premier destination where the revolutionary technologies of the 21st century are created, and lead to the creation of new jobs and opportunities,” Governor George Pataki said.
State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor John R. Ryan said, “I am proud to see the University at Albany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering recognized as the nation’s premier higher education institution for micro and nanotechnology. It is clear that the strategic investments made by Governor Pataki and our legislative leaders are elevating SUNY to a global leader in science and technology, creating opportunities that will benefit our students both today and tomorrow in the form of top-notch education and training and the ability to build high-tech careers.”
CNSE is the world’s first college devoted exclusively to the research, development and deployment of innovative nanoscience, nanoengineering and nanoeconomics concepts. There are currently more than 125 students enrolled in graduate-level study in nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience and nanoeconomics. The school is currently adding more faculty and creating an undergraduate program.
CNSE is home to the Albany Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics (NYSCEN), a $3 billion 450,000 square foot complex, which includes 200mm/300mm wafer facilities and nanoelectronics, system-on-a-chip technologies, biochips, optoelectronics and photonics devices, closed-loop sensors for monitoring, detection, and protection, and ultra-high-speed communication components.
With more than 65,000 square feet of Class 1 capable 300 mm wafer cleanrooms, as well as on-site faculty and student researchers, CNSE provides corporate partners with a unique environment to create, develop, and test new nanoscience and nanoengineering innovations within a technically aggressive and financially competitive research and development environment.
The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the State University of New York University at Albany partners with several resident firms including AMD, Applied Materials, ASML, Honeywell, IBM, Infineon, Micron Technologies, TEL, and SEMATECH.
In addition, the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering plays leadership roles in several R&D consortia including the MARCO Interconnect Focus Center funded by SIA, DARPA and the State of New York and the New York State Center for Advanced Interconnect Science and Technology, which is funded by SRC and New York State.
