Start-up Develops Latest Armor Technology
Formed in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, armored equipment manufacturer Armor Dynamics expects to create 570 new jobs over five years and secure $100 million in U.S. Department if Defense and Department of Homeland Security contracts.
The Tech Valley start-up company makes explosive-resistant equipment that protects troops against weapons ranging from high-caliber bullets to improvised explosive devices. Other products – already deployed by the military and law enforcement groups – include explosive-resistant trash barrels, protective shields and "bunker blocks" used to fortify military structures. With financial assistance from the New York State Office of Science, Technology & Academic Research (NYSTAR), Armor Dynamics was able to partner with a university researcher to develop a lightweight material – called MagmaCore – that absorbs and neutralizes the power of high-velocity bullets and bomb blasts.
"The material is quite revolutionary," said Jim Denn, NYSTAR’s deputy executive director. "It is so advanced."
"The (U.S. Department of Defense) designed armor for new vehicles, future combat systems for military vehicles," David Warren, a managing partner of Armored Dynamics said. "The police shield was designed specifically for homeland security and the trash can is designed for the Mass Transit/Port Authority."
Armor Dynamics plans to build a 58,000-square foot manufacturing facility at the Kingston Business Park to increase its output of armor for military and public safety uses. The company plans to invest $20 million in the project.
"This entrepreneurial spirit will foster innovation and encourage other business to invest in [Tech Valley]," State Sen. William Larkin, R-New Windsor said.
