Tech Valley Trout Season Underway

Trout season is under way throughout Tech Valley, signaling an unofficial start to spring and placing the region’s picturesque lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and creeks in the spotlight.

“It’s [fishing's] also a family event, so mom and dad can get the kids outside for some exercise and fresh air,” Jim Jones of Timberjim’s Live Bait & Tackle told The Adirondack Enterprise. “A trout fisherman is an adventurous angler. A lot of the trout waters are streams and ponds, so they are more apt to go out and look for spots.”

Trout season is open from April 1 through October 15.

To fish legally in Tech Valley, you must have a valid fishing license, except persons under 16 years old. Visit the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation Automated Licensing Systems (DECALS) web site for more information.

The Department of Environmental Conservation’s hatcheries will stagger the stockings throughout the spring and early summer.

Local fishing experts gave their fishing tips to The Adirondack Enterprise.

Matt Rothamel, Blue Line Sports Shop
“Trout are an elusive species and are one of the hardest to catch because they are picky eaters. It’s all about the right presentation. You need the right weight, reel, rod, fly line, tippet, leader and flies.”

Jeff Kirschman, Hungry Trout
“Right now there’s nothing going on at the top. For fly fishing you would be using a small stonefly.”

Jim Jones, Timberjim’s Live Bait & Tackle
Jones told the newspaper that for spin casting anglers, bread worms and trout worms should be used. Smaller minnows are popular where they are permitted to be used as bait.
