Black-Owned Firms on the Rise in Tech Valley
The number of black-owned businesses in Tech Valley jumped 54.4% over the past five years according to the recently released Black-Owned Firms: 2002 by the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of such firms in the U.S. grew by 45.4%.
Based on the Bureau's 2002 Survey of Business Owners, Tech Valley is home to 3,890 black-owned firms. These companies generated more than $216 million in sales. The 307 businesses with paid workers employed 2,147 and had a combined payroll of more than $44 million.
The survey results included data on 13 Tech Valley counties. Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Fulton, Montgomery, Orange, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Ulster, Warren and Washington Counties were included. Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Greene and Hamilton Counties were not included in the results.
