New York high school students in the Class of 2005 were tops in the nation at scoring on Advanced Placement (AP) tests, according to the College Board, administrators of the exams.
Also, AP program participation in New York is growing steadily among low-income, African-American and Latino students.
New York students scored "3" or better on 22.8 percent of the AP tests they took. The tests are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with “3” the minimum score needed to show mastery of a subject.
Nationally, students scored 3 or better 14.1 percent of the time.
New York students taking the tests grew 5.5% from last year to 83,565 students.
Success on AP exams can earn students credits at many colleges. They are also a good predictor of how well a student may do in college. Sixty-one percent of high school students who take two or more AP courses complete their college bachelor's degrees in four years or less.
Only 29% of students who have not taken any AP courses complete their bachelor's degrees in college within four years.
