Area Colleges Get High Marks for Value

University at Albany (66), SUNY New Paltz (74) and Plattsburgh State (97) all ranked among the top 100 schools in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's survey of best values among public universities for in-state students. For out-of-state students, UAlbany ranked 28th, New Paltz placed 39th and Plattsburgh came in 79th among public schools.

Marist College was ranked 50th among private schools.

Kiplinger's rated campuses on academic quality, cost and availability of financial aid. More emphasis was placed on academic strengths than costs.

"Affordability is an issue that we take seriously, and we work hard to keep our costs in line while ensuring a high-quality experience," Dr. John Ettling, president of Plattsburgh State told The Press Republican. "One of the reasons I like the Kiplinger's rankings is because the purpose is to identify schools across the country where students get a better education for their tuition than they would elsewhere."

The rankings are based on data provided by more than 500 public four-year colleges and universities.
