Tech Valley to Host New Semi Research
IBM, Sony and Toshiba said their next joint research project will focus on a new generation of computer chip designs at extremely small scales. The group will work on advancing technology at 32 nanometers and smaller to identify and commercialize new technologies.
A nanometer is a billionth of a meter or about 70,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
Research will take place at two sites in Tech Valley: IBM's 300 millimeter manufacturing and research plant in East Fishkill and the Center for Semiconductor Research at Albany NanoTech, part of the state University at Albany. Some work will also take place at IBM's Westchester County facility.
It represents the first time Toshiba and Sony will have researchers permanently assigned to the Albany NanoTech campus.
"That is the first commercial commitment in the world to 32 nano," Richard Doherty, research director of Envisioneering, told The Poughkeepsie Journal. "This deal does as much for the Hudson Valley's training and talent pool as anything else. Clearly, for the needs of Sony and Toshiba, they need a pyramid of talent." Doherty also said the companies are "turning to New York state for it, not to Tokyo and the University (of Texas) at Austin."
Alain Kaloyeros, president of Albany NanoTech, told the Times-Union that one of the key reasons the companies agreed to the new deal is because they can do research at UAlbany's $500 million Center for Semiconductor Research, which includes a new 28,000-square-foot clean room facility, where research on advanced semiconductor manufacturing will be done.
