The U.S. currency system is a matter of dollars and cents. Coins have values of one, five, 10, 25 and 50 cents. Dollar bills have values of $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
Tips are customary for a variety of services, including taxi rides, valet service, luggage assistance at a hotel and for meal service at a sit-down restaurant. During the holiday season, you may also give a gift or money for personal services to your postal mail carrier or day-care provider. When on vacation, you may also tip your guide if you take – for example – a canoe of whitewater rafting trip.
