Enrollment

Who Can Enroll
Children between the ages of five and 21 who have not already received a high school diploma may attend a New York state public school. Your child starts in the public school system in September of the year that he or she turns five. This includes immigrant students and children with learning or physical disabilities.

When to Enroll
For kindergarten and first grade, registration starts in the spring before the school year begins. For example, to enroll your child for the 2007– 08 school year that begins in September 2007, you may register in the spring of 2007. Check with your local school district for exact registration dates.

Students in grades 2–12 who are new to a school district may register immediately and begin school right away if enrolled during the academic year.

Documents Needed at Enrollment
At the time of enrollment, parents must show proof of immunization and proof of residence in that district. If your child is registering for the first time, you must also show proof of age such as a birth certificate or passport. Immigrants do not to need to confirm their immigration status. If your child is transferring to a new school, bring records such as report cards and transcripts to ensure your child is placed in the correct grade.

Residency Requirements
The school a child attends is based on the child’s residency – usually the same as his or her parent(s) or custodial parent. If a child's parents are separated or divorced, the child attends school where the parent who has primary custody lives. If the custody is shared, then the family determines the child's official residence.

If your family moves during the school year, your child is immediately transferred to the appropriate school for the new residency.

To prove you live in a school district, you need to present proof of residence such as a utility bill, lease or a statement from an employer, social agency, community-based organization or religious institution.

Immunization Requirements
When enrolling your children in public school, parents or guardians must provide proof that their children are immunized from diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B and varicella.

Refer to this chart (PDF) from the New York State Department of Health or call 518.473.4437 for exact immunization requirements for public school enrollment and attendance. Families may receive exemptions for religious or medical reasons.
